The Portland Economy in 2017: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly with Christian Kaylor

Portland has outperformed the United States economically across a range of economic metrics: job creation, income growth, and home equity. At the same time, a closer look at the data shows the region has fallen behind in sharing that prosperity across the region. We’ll examine the drivers behind Portland’s spectacular growth and growing income inequality with an eye toward what Portland’s unique economic structure may mean for the future.

Christian Kaylor is a Workforce Economist for the Oregon Employment Department, specializing in the Portland are. He provides data analysis and advice relating to the Portland economy to local businesses, business associations and government agencies to facilitate intelligent decision making. His monthly newsletter on the Portland economy has 750 subscribers.

Before coming to the Employment Department seventeen years ago, Christian worked in various positions in Oregon politics and policy. A native Oregonian, Christian has a degree in Economics from the University of Oregon.
